“The only question mark” – Pep Guardiola comments on Jack Grealish fitness issues amid Manchester City future uncertainty
Pep Guardiola’s Honest Verdict on Jack Grealish’s Injury Struggles and Future at Manchester City
Jack Grealish’s injury woes have put his Manchester City future in doubt, with Pep Guardiola admitting concerns over the winger’s ability to maintain fitness and consistency.
After playing a crucial role in City’s historic treble-winning campaign, Grealish has endured a frustrating season, plagued by injuries and a dip in form. As City prepares for a potential summer squad overhaul, uncertainty looms over whether Grealish will remain at the Etihad Stadium beyond this season.
Guardiola’s Concerns Over Grealish’s Fitness
The England international was limited to a brief substitute appearance in City’s recent 1-0 win over Tottenham, and while he would typically be in contention for a starting spot in Saturday’s FA Cup fifth-round clash against Plymouth Argyle, Guardiola remains unsure if he can handle successive matches.
“We’ll see today (Friday afternoon). I don’t know yet,” Guardiola said in his pre-match press conference, when asked if Grealish would start against the Championship side.
Grealish showed glimpses of his best when he assisted Kevin De Bruyne’s winner in City’s FA Cup fourth-round victory over Leyton Orient, but his season has been repeatedly disrupted by injuries.
Guardiola: “Never Doubt Grealish’s Quality”
Guardiola made it clear that Grealish’s struggles are purely physical and not a reflection of his ability.
“Jack played at Leyton Orient and was really good. Then he played against Real Madrid – and Madrid is not a friendly game, right? After 20 minutes, he was out injured. That’s what’s happened this season,” Guardiola explained.
With Jeremy Doku and incoming Savio competing for spots in City’s attacking lineup, Grealish faces increased competition—and Guardiola hinted that he needs consistent availability to earn his place.
“There’s no doubt about Jack’s quality—please, never, ever, ever doubt the quality that Jack has,” Guardiola insisted.
“The only issue is that he cannot play three games in a row. He plays well against Nottingham Forest, but then gets injured in training. It’s not a big issue, but he struggles to sustain game after game.”
What’s Next for Grealish?
With two years left on his contract, Grealish still has time to prove his worth in City’s Premier League and FA Cup run-in. However, Guardiola’s comments suggest that patience may be running thin, especially with City’s attacking options evolving.
Will Grealish overcome his fitness struggles and reclaim his key role in Guardiola’s plans, or is his time at the Etihad slowly running out?
The coming weeks could define his Manchester City future.
