Jannik Sinner continues his reign as ATP world No. 1, nearing his 39th straight week atop the rankings. The 23-year-old Italian, a three-time Major winner, is set to surpass Ilie Nastase, Andy Murray, and Gustavo Kuerten within five weeks, becoming the 13th player with at least 44 No. 1 weeks since 1973. He seized the top spot in June last year and has faced no real threat since.
His stellar 2024 season saw a 73-6 record, eight titles—including two Majors, three Masters 1000s, and the ATP Finals—cementing his hard-court supremacy. Sinner’s ascent began at the Australian Open, rallying from two sets down to beat Daniil Medvedev for his first Major at 22. Victories in Rotterdam, Miami, Cincinnati, and the US Open followed, alongside a Shanghai triumph over Novak Djokovic and a flawless ATP Finals run in Turin. He capped the year leading Italy to a Davis Cup title defense in Malaga.
However, a doping scandal loomed. After testing positive for Clostebol twice in March 2024, Sinner settled with WADA, accepting a three-month ban from February 9 to May 4, 2025, missing four Masters 1000 events and 1,600 points. Despite this, his lead holds firm, with Alexander Zverev faltering, gaining just 200 points in recent outings.
Sinner’s 2025 Australian Open defense was a success, dropping only two sets before defeating Zverev 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 in the final, preserving 2,000 points. Though the suspension casts a shadow, he’s poised to retain his No. 1 ranking and return strong in Rome, eyeing Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
