Andrey Rublev’s Temper Flares Again at Indian Wells
Andrey Rublev’s struggles with emotional outbursts on the tennis court have been well-documented over the past year and a half, and his frustrations have carried into the new season at Indian Wells.
During a recent training session, Rublev once again let his temper get the best of him. While practicing with Francisco Cerundolo—a player he ironically injured himself against in a previous incident—Rublev smashed his racket into the ground in frustration. The moment was caught on camera by journalist Jose Moron. Unlike during official matches, no warning or fine was issued, but the incident is another reminder of Rublev’s ongoing battle with his emotions.
The Russian star has a history of intense reactions on court, including smashing a racket against his knee to the point of bleeding and even being disqualified last season for yelling in an umpire’s face. His struggles with anger have been closely tied to his mental health, something he openly addressed last year.
“Mentally, I was out of order in recent months,” Rublev admitted. “I guess it was already a long moment of everything getting to me, and I started to burn out. I had been struggling for many years with depression and many things outside the court.”
He further explained how his emotions reached a breaking point: “This year, I just couldn’t handle it anymore, and it started to explode. It exploded more and more on the court, because in life I was able to stay calm, but inside the court, I was burning everything.”
While Rublev remains a top competitor, managing his emotions will be crucial as he looks to stay focused and avoid further incidents this season.
