Nick Kyrgios Criticizes Jannik Sinner, Calls Doping Case “More Cringe Daily”

Nick Kyrgios didn’t hold back after reading coach Darren Cahill’s praise of Jannik Sinner, calling the Italian’s doping case “more cringe daily.”

Cahill, who coaches Sinner, recently appeared on Caroline Garcia’s tennis podcast, where he addressed the controversy surrounding the world No. 1. The 60-year-old lauded Sinner’s handling of the situation, saying he was dealing with the scrutiny in the best way possible.

“But he said to me the other day: ‘Don’t concern yourself with the criticism of someone you wouldn’t take advice from,’” Cahill shared on the Tennis Insider Club.

“I looked at him and thought: ‘Are you really 23 years old?’ I know that’s a common quote, but hearing it from him was impressive. He’s a mature young man, a good young man, and I know Italy is very proud of him – as they should be.

Kyrgios Responds to Cahill’s Comments

Kyrgios wasn’t impressed. The 2022 Wimbledon finalist took to Instagram to react to Cahill’s remarks, responding to a Tennis365 post by saying:

“Like his team that gave him a prohibited substance… gets more cringe every day.”

Sinner’s doping case has been a major topic in tennis. After the ITIA revealed that he failed a drug test, it was determined that a banned substance entered his system due to negligence from his physio, with no fault placed on Sinner himself.

However, WADA contested the ITIA’s decision not to impose a ban. While they acknowledged that Sinner did not knowingly or intentionally take a prohibited substance, they still pushed for a suspension. Eventually, a three-month ban was agreed upon between WADA and the three-time Grand Slam champion.

With Sinner set to return in May, the debate surrounding his case—and Kyrgios’ criticism—is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
