Zverev’s Grand Slam Struggles Continue, But Mouratoglou Sees Hope

Once hailed as the future of men’s tennis, Alexander Zverev has yet to secure the one achievement that would cement his legacy—winning a Grand Slam singles title.

The German star has come agonizingly close on multiple occasions, reaching three major finals but falling short each time. His latest disappointment came at the 2025 Australian Open, where he was defeated in straight sets by World No.1 Jannik Sinner.

Time Running Out for Zverev? Mouratoglou Weighs In

Zverev, currently ranked World No.2, has also reached the finals of the 2020 US Open and the 2024 French Open, suffering defeats to Dominic Thiem and Carlos Alcaraz, respectively. Despite his impressive résumé—boasting multiple Masters 1000 titles and an Olympic gold medal—his inability to break through at a Grand Slam has raised questions about whether he will ever get over the line.

Famed coach Patrick Mouratoglou addressed this topic in a recent Instagram Q&A, where he was asked if Zverev still had a shot at winning a major. While Mouratoglou acknowledged the challenge, he refused to rule it out entirely.

“I think there are still things he needs to improve in his game,” said Mouratoglou. “With today’s top players, it’s not easy, but he can still do it.”

Struggles Since Melbourne

Since his runner-up finish at the Australian Open, Zverev has struggled to regain form. The 27-year-old has failed to reach a single semifinal in four tournaments where he was the top seed, a worrying trend for a player in his prime. His most recent setback came at Indian Wells, where he suffered an unexpected first-round exit to Tallon Griekspoor.

With the French Open fast approaching, Zverev will need to find his rhythm quickly if he hopes to finally break his Grand Slam curse.
