Alex de Minaur’s Struggles Continue at Indian Wells Despite Strong Support System
Alex de Minaur’s form slump deepened on Wednesday as he crashed out of Indian Wells in the fourth round. However, he wasn’t short of high-profile support, with Lleyton Hewitt and his wife, Bec, cheering him on from the stands—highlighting the close-knit team around him as he looks to bounce back.
Bec Hewitt was spotted sitting alongside de Minaur’s fiancée, Katie Boulter, sparking curiosity among tennis fans about their connection. The answer lies in Lleyton Hewitt’s long-standing mentorship of de Minaur. The former World No. 1 has been guiding the Aussie star for years, even welcoming him into his family home during his early days as a professional.
A Special Bond Between the Hewitts and de Minaur
De Minaur, who has been based in Spain for most of his life, didn’t have a home base in Australia at the start of his career. The Hewitt family took him in, forming a bond that remains strong to this day.
“It was great to have that inside advice all the time and hear his thoughts on everything,” de Minaur once said.
“I stayed with him in Sydney and Melbourne. At the French Open during my junior days, he came out, and we had a nice chat where he told me he’d support me however I needed.
“The amount he has done for me is unbelievable. I couldn’t be more grateful. I spent time with his family, and we even went out to dinner together. It was really special.”
Returning the Favor: De Minaur Mentors Cruz Hewitt
The connection between de Minaur and the Hewitt family was evident back in 2018, when he attended the Newcombe Medal ceremony with Lleyton, Bec, and their son, Cruz. Now that Cruz Hewitt is 16 and pursuing his own tennis career, de Minaur has stepped into the role of mentor, just as Lleyton once did for him.
Earlier this year, de Minaur even practiced with Cruz ahead of the Australian Open, where the teenager secured his first Grand Slam victory in the junior competition. Cruz is regularly spotted sitting alongside his father during de Minaur’s matches, and Bec Hewitt has also been seen supporting de Minaur courtside on multiple occasions.
De Minaur’s Form Slump Raises Concerns
After reaching his first Australian Open quarter-final in January, de Minaur followed it up with an impressive runner-up finish in Rotterdam, losing to Carlos Alcaraz. However, his momentum has since stalled, causing him to slip from World No. 6 to No. 10.
His recent results include:
- Quarter-final exit in Doha
- Second-round exit in Dubai
- Shock fourth-round loss to Francisco Cerundolo at Indian Wells
De Minaur’s struggles come after his controversial decision to skip Acapulco, where he was the two-time defending champion, opting instead to compete in Doha and Dubai. The move was aimed at gaining extra ranking points and a share of the $10 million prize pool, but it backfired, costing him valuable momentum and ranking positions.
Had he played in Acapulco, he would have been a strong favorite to win, especially after several top seeds withdrew due to illness.
Now, with his ranking and confidence taking a hit, de Minaur will need to reset and refocus as he looks to regain his form in the coming tournaments.
