Alex de Minaur has fallen out of the world’s top-10 for the first time in over a year after Jack Draper surged to No.7 after winning the Indian Wells title. Draper beat Holger Rune 6-2 6-2 in the final of the Masters 1000 event, and has rocketed up the rankings.
Draper came into the tournament ranked 14th in the world, but produced a stunning run to the title that included a win over World No.3 Carlos Alcaraz in the semis. The Brit will be World No.7 when the ATP rankings are updated on Monday, and the player to make way in the top-10 is de Minaur.
The Aussie has only been bumped down to 11th, but it marks the first time in over 12 months he hasn’t been ranked in the top-10. De Minaur surged to a career-high World No.6 in February after making the quarters at the Australian Open and final in Rotterdam.
But he’s hit a rough patch of form over the last month, and was made to pay for relinquishing his back-to-back titles at the Mexican Open. Rather then defend his title in Acapulco (which he won in 2023 and 2024), de Minaur chose to play in Doha and Dubai to chase the extra rankings points and $10 million in prize money on offer.
It was initially looking like fiancee Katie Boulter would play the WTA events in Doha and Dubai around the same time, giving the engaged couple some rare time together. But she withdrew from both events with a foot injury, and de Minaur lost in the quarters and second round respectively.
The Aussie star then lost in the fourth round at Indian Wells, meaning he’s never made it to the quarters at the tournament in the Californian desert. With Boulter losing in the second round, a worrying trend appears to have emerged around tournaments the loved-up couple have played together at the same time.
Katie Boulter congratulates Jack Draper
Speaking of Boulter, the British star showed her allegiances are divided when she congratulated compatriot Draper on social media – even though it meant de Minaur was bumped down the rankings. In a social media post that also included a photo of her and the Demon to mark five years together, Boulter also celebrated her friend Draper’s breakthrough triumph.
There’s no suggestion Boulter did anything wrong by congratulating Draper, but she’s been open and honest in the past about having conflicting emotions when Australia plays Great Britain at events like the United Cup. In December, the World No.35 said she hoped de Minaur won his singles match but that GB would win overall.
Draper’s win was his first at a Masters 1000 event and the biggest of his career. “I lost first round here last year so I didn’t get to experience the tournament too much,” he said after beating Rune. “I would say this is one of my favourite tournaments now.
“I have put in a lot of work over time and I’m so grateful to be out here, with my body healthy and feeling great in the mind. It feels like it is all coming together on the big stage.”
Mirra Andreeva stuns tennis world with Indian Wells title
In the women’s event, Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva stunned World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka to claim the title. The 17-year-old beat Sabalenka 2-6 6-4 6-3 to become the tournament’s youngest champion since Serena Williams in 1999.
Andreeva also beat World No.2 Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals, improving to 19-3 this season – the most wins on the WTA Tour. She collected her second Masters 1000 title of 2025 after winning her first in Dubai.
