James Wade has jumped on the Emma Hayes chalkboard debate to help promote this week’s US Darts Masters in New York.
The veteran darts star is heading to the Big Apple for the tournament at Madison Square Garden and couldn’t resist referencing the controversy surrounding Hayes’ World Cup analysis segment on ITV.
Posting on X alongside an edited image of Hayes standing beside the now-famous chalkboard setup used during hydration breaks, Wade wrote: “Everyone’s talking about it…
“Darts on @ITVSport from New York this weekend while @England are preparing for Panama in the @FIFAWorldCup.
“Looking forward to this one.”
In Wade’s playful edit, Hayes appears to be using the chalkboard to keep score in a darts leg, counting down from 501. The image also features the US Darts Masters logo and shows “The Machine” seemingly completing a perfect nine-darter.
Hayes’ analysis segment became a major talking point after viewers pointed out that the set resembled a kitchen. Critics questioned ITV’s decision to place one of football’s most respected coaches in that environment, with some accusing the broadcaster of relying on sexist stereotypes.
Many fans argued that male pundits such as Gary Neville would never have been asked to deliver tactical analysis in a similar setting.
The issue quickly gained traction online, prompting ITV to make adjustments. Rather than showing the full backdrop, the broadcaster now uses tighter camera angles focused solely on Hayes and her analysis board.
The former Chelsea boss, who won a record 15 trophies during her time at the club, was originally provided with little more than a chalkboard and a piece of chalk for her tactical breakdowns.
Meanwhile, Wade will be competing in New York as football fans juggle a packed sporting schedule.
The US Darts Masters takes place during the World Cup, creating several viewing clashes for supporters. With ITV showing delayed coverage of the darts while PDCTV streams the action live overnight, fans face a choice between following the arrows or keeping up with key World Cup fixtures.
England’s World Cup clash with Panama kicks off at 10pm UK time on Saturday, the same day the US Darts Masters reaches its conclusion, ensuring sports fans have plenty to keep an eye on throughout the weekend.
