Holger Rune has revealed an important lesson he learned from Carlos Alcaraz’s defeat to Jack Draper at Indian Wells, which he hopes to apply to his own game.

Rune, who fell to Draper in straight sets in the final, admitted that he closely analyzed Alcaraz’s performance in the quarter-finals, where the Spaniard was also beaten by the in-form Brit.

Reflecting on Draper’s dominant run, Rune noted that one of the key takeaways from Alcaraz’s loss was the importance of adapting to an opponent’s game style and finding ways to disrupt their rhythm.

“I watched Carlos play against Jack, and one thing I noticed was how difficult it was for him to find his usual intensity and attacking game,” Rune said in his post-match press conference. “Jack was dictating a lot, and Carlos struggled to turn the match around. That’s something I want to learn from—how to change the dynamics of a match when things aren’t going my way.”

Rune acknowledged that Draper’s aggressive baseline play and strong serving made it difficult for both him and Alcaraz to impose their usual high-energy, offensive style. He admitted that his own game plan against Draper lacked the necessary adjustments.

“Jack played an amazing tournament, no doubt. But I feel like I could have done more to take control of the points when I had the chance. That’s something I want to improve—being able to recognize those key moments and step up my game,” Rune added.

With Draper’s win marking his biggest career title and Alcaraz and Rune both looking for answers, the young Danish star is eager to take this lesson forward as he continues to chase success on the ATP Tour.
