Simona Halep Slams ITIA Over Iga Swiatek’s Short Ban After Losing Two Years of Her Career

Simona Halep has hit out at the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) after Iga Swiatek received a one-month suspension for a doping violation—while Halep herself was banned for two years under similar circumstances.

The two-time Grand Slam champion expressed her frustration over what she perceives as inconsistencies in the anti-doping system, questioning why she faced such severe consequences while Swiatek’s case was resolved swiftly.

Halep’s Anger Over Double Standards

Halep, who was suspended after testing positive for roxadustat at the 2022 US Open, has maintained that she never intentionally doped and that the banned substance entered her system through a contaminated supplement. Despite her defense, the ITIA banned her for four years, later reduced to nine months on appeal.

In contrast, Swiatek tested positive for trimetazidine (TMZ) before the Cincinnati Open, yet she only served a 22-day ban during the Asian swing before being cleared to return. The ITIA ruled that Swiatek had “no significant fault or negligence” and that the substance entered her system through contaminated melatonin.

The disparity between the two rulings has left Halep furious.

“I lost two years of my career for something I never knowingly took, and now I see a different player getting just a slap on the wrist for a similar case,” Halep reportedly fumed.

She further criticized the ITIA’s handling of anti-doping cases, calling for greater transparency and fairness in the system.

Calls for Reform in Tennis’ Anti-Doping System

Halep’s frustration echoes growing concerns among players about how doping violations are investigated and punished. The Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), co-founded by Novak Djokovic, has already condemned the WTA’s reaction to Swiatek’s ban, arguing that the anti-doping process is flawed and unfairly burdens players.

With Halep’s career significantly impacted by her lengthy ban, her outrage over Swiatek’s short suspension will likely fuel further debate over the inconsistencies in tennis’ anti-doping regulations.
