Nick Kyrgios makes feelings known on accepting wildcards after securing first win in over 2 years at Miami Open
Nick Kyrgios Discusses Wildcard Entries After Miami Open Win
Nick Kyrgios secured his first victory in over two years at the Miami Open, defeating Mackenzie McDonald 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round.
The Australian has struggled with injuries, missing most of 2023 and 2024 due to a wrist ligament tear sustained during a practice session in Mallorca. Since his return, he has faced a series of early exits, bowing out in the first round of the Brisbane International, Australian Open, and BNP Paribas Open. At Indian Wells, signs of persistent wrist pain forced him to retire mid-match against Botic van de Zandschulp.
Kyrgios on Wildcard Entries: “I Don’t Want to Take Others’ Opportunities”
Speaking to Tennis Channel, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist opened up about his stance on accepting wildcard entries. While acknowledging that he could receive wildcards for most events, Kyrgios admitted he dislikes the idea, as it may come at the expense of younger players trying to break into the tour.
“I know I could probably get wild cards at most of the events, but I don’t want to be taking other people’s opportunities. There are a lot of good, young players at these events, and I don’t like just going in and taking wild cards because that’s their development,” he said via Tennis.com.
Retirement Hints After Australian Open Exit
Earlier this season, Kyrgios hinted at retirement following his first-round loss at the Australian Open. Facing Jacob Fearnley, he fell in straight sets, marking a disappointing result in his home Slam.
In the post-match press conference, Kyrgios spoke about the physical toll of the match and suggested that it might have been his final singles appearance at the tournament.
“Yeah, I mean, realistically, I can’t really see myself playing singles again here. It was special… I was hurting physically. I respect my opponent. The fans waited hours to come see me play. Yeah, realistically, I can’t see myself playing a singles match here again,” he said.
However, after securing his first win in over two years, Kyrgios seemed rejuvenated as he now prepares to face Karen Khachanov in the next round of the Miami Open.
