Ferrari’s Sprint Pole in China Sparks Hype—But Vasseur Urges Caution

McLaren entered the Chinese Grand Prix sprint as clear favorites for pole, but Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari delivered a stunning upset, seizing the top spot in a strong rebound from their struggles in Australia.

Does this signal the start of a dominant 2025 season for Ferrari? Team principal Fred Vasseur isn’t ready to make that call just yet.

Vasseur’s Warning After Hamilton’s Sprint Pole

Hearing “Lewis Hamilton, polesitter” has been a rarity in recent years, but the seven-time champion made it happen, expertly guiding his SF-25 to the first sprint pole of the season. However, while Ferrari’s performance looks promising, Vasseur remains cautious.

Hamilton’s pole position came by just 0.018 seconds over Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, showing just how tight the competition remains. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri starts third, alongside Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, while championship contender Lando Norris will line up sixth after a costly mistake on his final flying lap.

This strong showing is an improvement from Australia, where Leclerc and Hamilton started seventh and eighth, but Vasseur insists it’s too early for bold predictions.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Vasseur acknowledged Ferrari’s progress but emphasized that one result doesn’t define the season:

“We’re definitely in a better position than Australia, but we need to stay grounded. The battle at the top is incredibly close.”
