Emma Raducanu’s career has been a rollercoaster—marked by injuries, inconsistency, and frequent coaching changes. Yet, her ability to perform under pressure remains one of her defining strengths. As LTA’s Iain Bates observed, “One of the things I’ve been hugely impressed with is how calm she is and how she is taking it all in her stride.”

Raducanu’s Inner Strength: A Key to Success

Back in 2021, when she made the Wimbledon Round of 16 as a wildcard and then stormed through the US Open as a qualifier, Raducanu credited her upbringing for her ability to handle high-pressure moments.

“The calmness and mental strength definitely come from my upbringing. My parents instilled in me from a very young age to have a positive attitude on court,” she once said.

But resilience is more than just mindset—it’s about persistence in the face of adversity.

Longest Match in Miami: A Gritty Victory

Raducanu demonstrated that resilience in her 2-hour and 53-minute battle against Navarro—the longest match at the Miami Open this year.

After receiving treatment for a foot injury, she found herself trailing 3-1 in the final set. At that point, Navarro seemed poised for victory. But Raducanu refused to fold, saving break points and shifting to a more aggressive strategy to close out the match 7-6(6), 2-6, 7-6(3).

“I really do relish a tight scenario. I have this inner calmness that I tap into in those moments,” Raducanu told Tennis Channel after the win. “Other times in matches, I might be more emotional, but when it’s 5- or 6-all, I just find a coolness within me.”

Raducanu Reflects on the Meaning of This Victory

The Brit, who secured her third career Top 10 win, was emotional after the match. Speaking to Sky Sports, she ranked this as her most significant win of the season.

“It’s number one—Emma is a Top 10 player, and I hadn’t beaten one this year. The match wasn’t pretty, but I had to fight, scrap, and be aggressive.”

She also contrasted this moment with her 2021 US Open triumph, explaining why this Miami victory felt even more meaningful in some ways.

“I wouldn’t say it’s bigger in terms of magnitude, but emotionally, it means more. When I won the US Open, I was in red-hot form, winning 10 matches in straight sets. I didn’t experience the downs, the losses, or the months of struggling. Coming out of that now, this win means a lot more.”

What’s Next for Raducanu?

With this hard-fought win, Raducanu advances to the third round, where she’ll face American McCartney Kessler in their first-ever meeting.

Can she continue her resurgence in Miami? Her performance against Navarro suggests she’s ready to fight for it.
