Paula Badosa Withdraws from Miami Open Due to Back Injury
Paula Badosa has suffered another setback, withdrawing from the Miami Open due to persistent back pain. The Spaniard pulled out ahead of her scheduled match against 19-year-old Alexandra Eala, allowing the Filipina to advance to the quarterfinals, where she will face world No. 1 Iga Świątek.
Badosa had been in strong form recently, proving that when healthy, she remains one of the WTA Tour’s top players. However, her back issues resurfaced at the WTA 500 event in Mérida, forcing her to retire mid-match against Daria Saville despite winning the first set.
To recover, Badosa skipped Indian Wells and focused on preparing for Miami. She started well, battling past Victoria Mboko in a tough second-round match. However, during her third-round victory over Clara Tauson, she felt the familiar pain return. Despite winning in straight sets, she ultimately decided to withdraw from the tournament.
A Crucial Moment in the Season
Badosa now faces a critical challenge in managing her health while defending key ranking points. Though she has opted out of the Paris Olympics to focus on the North American hard-court swing, her performance in upcoming tournaments will be crucial.
Her 2024 clay season was inconsistent, with early exits in Charleston and Madrid, but she found better form on grass, reaching the Bad Homburg quarterfinals and the Wimbledon fourth round. However, her biggest success came on hard courts, where she won the WTA 500 title at the DC Open and made deep runs in Cincinnati, China, and Ningbo. A quarterfinal finish at the US Open helped her return to the Top 10.
Now, as she fights to maintain her ranking, her primary goal is to stay healthy. If she can recover, she has already proven she belongs among the world’s best.
