Jannik Sinner has been the dominant force on the ATP Tour since the start of 2024, capturing three of the five available Grand Slam titles. Now ranked world No. 1, the 23-year-old Italian has set a blistering pace that few players have been able to match.

After winning the Australian Open in January—adding to his previous Major victories in New York and Melbourne—Sinner seemed unstoppable. However, a recent three-month suspension will see him miss the first four Masters 1000 tournaments of 2025, presenting a temporary roadblock in his otherwise stellar rise.

Despite his dominance, some believe Sinner’s game has a potential vulnerability. Taylor Fritz’s coach, Michael Russell, has identified a specific area where the Italian can be made uncomfortable—and it could be the key to Fritz closing the gap in their rivalry.

Taylor Fritz’s Coach on How to Challenge Sinner

World No. 4 Taylor Fritz enjoyed the best season of his career in 2024, reaching his first Grand Slam final at the US Open, where he fell to Sinner. Now, his coach, Michael Russell, is studying ways to flip the script.

“Taylor is very calculated,” Russell said. “In pressure moments, he has a great tennis IQ, but sometimes he overthinks. It’s about balancing risk and reward—he needs to take more chances in certain situations against players like Sinner.”

One specific strategy Russell suggests? Forcing Sinner to the net.

“With Jannik, it’s about developing the slice and bringing him forward,” he explained. “He’s not as comfortable at the net. Not to say he isn’t capable, but from the baseline, he has two wings that can really hurt you. The goal is to put him in awkward positions.”

Head-to-Head: Sinner vs. Fritz

Fritz struggled against Sinner in 2024, losing three consecutive matches, including the US Open final and the ATP Finals title match.

Match Winner Loser Score
2024 ATP Finals – F Jannik Sinner Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4
2024 ATP Finals – RR Jannik Sinner Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4
2024 US Open – F Jannik Sinner Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 7-5
2023 Indian Wells – QF Jannik Sinner Taylor Fritz 6-4, 4-6, 6-4
2021 Indian Wells – 4R Taylor Fritz Jannik Sinner 6-4, 6-3

Sinner’s ATP Finals victory in Turin further solidified his control over their rivalry. However, Fritz last defeated the Italian in 2021 at Indian Wells. As they prepare for their next showdown, all eyes will be on whether Fritz can apply his coach’s strategy and put Sinner under pressure at the net.

Fritz Closes in on Alcaraz in ATP Rankings

Fritz’s strong showing at the Miami Open, including a win over Adam Walton, has helped him inch closer to a career-high ranking. With world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz suffering an early exit in Miami, Fritz has a chance to narrow the gap even further.

Fritz is currently 1,630 points behind Alcaraz but could close the gap further with a win over Matteo Berrettini in the Miami Open quarterfinals on March 27.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on whether Fritz can continue his rise—and if his new approach against Sinner will yield better results.
