Carlos Alcaraz Raises Concerns After Jack Draper Defeat
Carlos Alcaraz has suffered consecutive upset defeats, sparking speculation about his mindset.
Alcaraz Admits to Mental Struggles
Top tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou believes Alcaraz may have added pressure on himself with his candid comments after losing to Jack Draper at the Indian Wells Masters. The four-time Grand Slam winner admitted he focused too much on Draper’s game rather than his own, calling it a “big problem.”
“I always say that I have to be focused on myself, on my own game,” Alcaraz said. “Today, I was more worried about his level.”
Alcaraz followed this loss with a first-round Miami Open exit against David Goffin, raising further concerns.
Mouratoglou’s Perspective
Mouratoglou, who now coaches Naomi Osaka, reflected on Alcaraz’s words:
“It was his choice to say that. I don’t know if it was good or not. If admitting it helps him, why not? Most players wouldn’t say it, so we’ll see if it lifts or adds pressure.”
He also compared Alcaraz’s comments to Rafael Nadal’s past admissions of mental struggles. Nadal, despite acknowledging his difficulties, made strong comebacks—something Mouratoglou suggests Alcaraz could do as well.
Alcaraz’s Recent Form
Since winning the China Open nearly six months ago, Alcaraz has claimed only one ATP Tour victory at the Rotterdam Open in February. With the French Open and Wimbledon approaching, he will need to regain form to compete against top contenders.
Will Alcaraz bounce back, or are these struggles a sign of deeper issues?
