“She can beat anybody anytime, anywhere”: Maria Sharapova’s ex-coach backs Jessica Pegula to win Grand Slam in 2025
Jessica Pegula has received a strong vote of confidence from renowned tennis coach Rick Macci, who believes the American is primed to win a Grand Slam title this year. The 31-year-old is currently competing in the Miami Open, where she advanced to the semifinals with a hard-fought victory over Emma Raducanu, winning 6-4, 6-7, 6-2.
Macci, who previously coached legends like Maria Sharapova, Andy Roddick, Serena Williams, and Venus Williams, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share his bold prediction for Pegula’s season.
Macci’s Grand Slam Prediction
“Pegula has always been one of the best pure ball strikers on tour not to win a Slam. She can beat anybody, anytime, anywhere. One of the most rock-solid players off both wings. The Buffalo Blaster could grab a SLAM this year,” Macci wrote.
Pegula’s Grand Slam record has been modest, but she came close to breaking through at the 2024 US Open, where she finished as the runner-up. In the final, she fell to world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5.
Pegula Reflects on Miami Open Quarterfinal Win
Following her quarterfinal victory over Raducanu, Pegula acknowledged the challenge she faced against the resurgent Brit.
“It was tough,” Pegula admitted. “I played a good first set but had a little letdown in the second. I got it back, went up 2-0 in the tiebreak, but then it flipped. She started moving the ball really well and serving great. Sometimes, that’s just how it goes.
“I wanted to come out strong in the third set, start quick, and not keep it too close. I love playing here, I love playing at home, and I love getting wins in the Dolphins’ stadium. I always play really well here. I’m hoping the third time’s the charm—I want to make it to that final so bad, and I’ll give it another shot tomorrow night.”
