Fritz Survives Thriller, Defeats Berrettini in Miami QFs
Taylor Fritz fought back after missing six match points to edge Matteo Berrettini in a dramatic Miami Open quarter-final. The American, seeking his second ATP Masters 1000 title, prevailed 7-5, 6-7(7), 7-5 in a tense 2-hour, 44-minute battle.
Despite holding a 6/3 lead in the second-set tiebreak and two match points at 6-5, Fritz was forced into a decider. However, he stayed composed and broke Berrettini at 5-5 in the third set, ultimately closing out the match.
“There were two options: get frustrated and lose, or regroup and win,” Fritz said. “Now I can sleep without regretting those missed chances.”
Bold Return Tactics Pay Off
Fritz maintained his perfect 5-0 record against Berrettini by taking an aggressive return stance. Standing close to the baseline, he neutralized Berrettini’s powerful serve, winning 62% of second-serve return points.
“He has such a big serve that standing back gives him time to attack,” Fritz explained. “I like to chip those forehands and take control when I can.”
The No. 4-ranked American hit 16 aces and converted 3 of 11 break points, including the crucial one at 5-5 in the final set.
What’s Next?
Fritz will face Jakub Mensik in the semi-finals. The 19-year-old Czech is making his ATP Masters 1000 semifinal debut, but Fritz holds a 1-0 record against him, winning their 2023 US Open clash in straight sets.
