Novak Djokovic Schedule Change Sparks Fan Outrage at Miami Open
Miami Open organizers faced backlash after rescheduling Novak Djokovic’s quarter-final match against Sebastian Korda, leaving many fans disappointed. Originally set to take place late Wednesday night following Emma Raducanu’s match against Jessica Pegula, Djokovic’s match was pushed to Thursday due to the event’s 11 p.m. cut-off rule.
Persistent rain earlier in the week had already disrupted scheduling, forcing adjustments to multiple matches, including Arthur Fils vs. Alexander Zverev. However, fans were particularly upset about the lack of timely communication regarding Djokovic’s rescheduled match.
Fans Express Frustration Over Last-Minute Change
Samantha Triana, a 27-year-old fan from Miami who has followed Djokovic since childhood, expressed her disappointment after spending £176 ($227) on tickets.
“I bought the tickets specifically to see Djokovic. I work until 5 p.m., so night sessions are my only option. Finding out at 11:35 p.m. that the match was moved was frustrating—everyone was staying to see him,” Triana told Express Sport.
Social media erupted with criticism, with some fans revealing they had spent over £773 ($1,000) for seats. While tournament officials offered discounted $12.50 tickets for Thursday’s session, refunds were not issued since at least one match had been completed, meeting the criteria to avoid reimbursement.
Call for Better Scheduling and Refund Options
Triana argued that ticket holders should have been offered free entry for Djokovic’s rescheduled match.
“Many of us work and can’t just come back the next day. Two of my friends won’t be able to make it. A refund option would have been fair,” she added.
Despite her frustration, she secured tickets for Thursday and planned to return after work to watch Djokovic in action.
The Miami Open continues to face scrutiny over its scheduling decisions, with fans calling for improved communication and refund policies in similar situations.
