Tim Henman Identifies Emma Raducanu’s Biggest Challenge—And It’s Not Her Next Coach
Raducanu’s Miami Open Run Signals a Potential Comeback
Emma Raducanu showcased her best tennis since winning the 2021 US Open, reaching her first WTA 1000 quarter-final at the Miami Open. The 22-year-old impressed with victories over top-ranked opponents, including Emma Navarro, before pushing Jessica Pegula to a deciding set in an intense battle.
Her strong performance has sparked discussions about her future, with former British No. 1 Tim Henman weighing in on what’s truly holding her back.
Henman: Staying Fit Is Raducanu’s Top Priority
Raducanu’s coaching situation has been a constant talking point, especially after her split with Vladimir Platenik following just one match together in Indian Wells. While she worked with former mentors Jane O’Donoghue and Mark Petchey in Miami, Henman believes coaching changes are secondary to another major concern—her physical resilience.
“She does it differently. She changes coaches. That isn’t necessarily what everyone else likes to do, but she is comfortable with it,” Henman told Sky Sports Tennis.
“For me, building physical resilience is most important because she has almost had her career back to front. Qualifying and winning that Slam without the foundation physically… her body was breaking down when she was in competition.”
Henman praised Raducanu’s consistency in 2025, noting that staying active on court is key to her long-term success.
Will Petchey Return as Raducanu’s Coach?
Speculation continues regarding Mark Petchey’s potential return to Raducanu’s coaching team. However, his commitments as a Tennis Channel analyst in the U.S. could limit his availability.
“Petch is working for the Tennis Channel and has a commitment to them. It will be interesting to see what Emma’s next move is,” Henman added.
Navratilova: Raducanu Can Rise Again—If She Stays Healthy
Tennis legend Martina Navratilova echoed Henman’s sentiments, stating that Raducanu’s fitness will determine her future.
“If she stays healthy and plays this well, then she’ll be seeded at Roland Garros,” Navratilova told Sky Sports Tennis.
“I think she’ll move into the top 30. The biggest question mark is her health. If she plays like she did against Pegula, the sky’s the limit.”
What’s Next for Raducanu?
With her Wimbledon campaign approaching, Raducanu will aim to build on her Miami momentum and continue rising in the rankings. If she can stay injury-free, her return to the WTA’s elite could happen sooner than expected
