Emma Raducanu’s Underrated Strengths Highlighted in Rafael Nadal Comparison
Former world No. 24 Annabel Croft has pinpointed key aspects of Emma Raducanu’s game that contributed to her impressive performance at the 2025 Miami Open.
Raducanu entered the tournament struggling, having lost six of her last seven matches and holding a 3-6 record for the year. However, she defied expectations, making a remarkable run to the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 event.
The 22-year-old defeated Sayaka Ishii, Emma Navarro, McCartney Kessler, and Amanda Anisimova, dropping just one set before falling to world No. 4 Jessica Pegula in a hard-fought three-set match. This marked her first-ever appearance in the quarter-finals of a WTA 1000 tournament.
Key Factors in Raducanu’s Resurgence
In her column for The Times, Croft emphasized that Raducanu’s serve, return, and net play were instrumental in her Miami success.
Improved Serve
“Her serve, previously a weakness, became a powerful weapon. The accuracy was outstanding, and her steady motion made it difficult for opponents to anticipate direction,” Croft explained.
Elite Return Game
Croft also praised Raducanu’s returning ability, ranking it among the best on tour. “The depth and quality of her returns put immense pressure on her opponents, often forcing errors on first serves and creating opportunities on second serves, which she punished aggressively.”
Underrated Volleys – A Rafael Nadal Comparison
One surprising strength Croft highlighted was Raducanu’s net play, likening it to Rafael Nadal’s often-overlooked volleying skills. “While Raducanu isn’t known for frequent net approaches, she rarely misses when she does come forward. Nadal, too, was underrated at the net due to his baseline dominance, yet had an exceptional success rate up front. We may see Raducanu utilize this more, particularly on grass.”
The Remaining Challenge: Physical Endurance
Despite her strong showing, Croft noted that fitness remains a concern. “There are still moments of physical drop-off, as seen in the second sets against Navarro and Pegula. However, her work with fitness trainer Yutaka Nakamura is ongoing, and the frequent injuries of the past seem less prominent now.”
Raducanu’s Miami Open run showcased her evolving game and potential for future success. With continued refinement, especially in fitness, she could establish herself as a consistent force on the WTA Tour.
