Jannik Sinner Handed Three-Month Ban for Doping Violation

Three-time Grand Slam champion Jannik Sinner has been handed a three-month suspension after testing positive for the banned substance clostebol. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) imposed the ban after Sinner admitted partial responsibility, citing mistakes within his team.

His former physical trainer, Umberto Ferrara, has now spoken out about the controversy, asserting his innocence and placing full responsibility on Sinner’s former physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi.

“I was well aware that the substance was banned, so I always kept it safely in my wash bag. I advised Naldi to use it for a persistent cut but was very clear that it should never come into contact with Jannik. I even told him to use it only in my bathroom. Naldi did not deny this but later claimed he couldn’t recall,” Ferrara told Gazzetta dello Sport.

Ferrara further explained that the clostebol-containing spray had been prescribed to him for a medical condition, and he had taken precautions to store it safely. However, he alleges that Naldi ignored warnings, failed to wear gloves, and did not wash his hands before treating Sinner, ultimately leading to accidental contamination.

Looking back, Ferrara admitted he would have handled things differently and expressed regret over how the situation unfolded, saying he suffered due to the “bad faith of others.”

Sinner’s Return to Action

Sinner’s suspension is set to end on May 4, just in time for the French Open. He is expected to make his return at the Hamburg clay-court tournament, followed by the Italian Open in Rome.
