Jannik Sinner’s ex-coach Riccardo Piatti makes his feelings known on Italian’s success years after split
Jannik Sinner’s Former Coach Riccardo Piatti Reflects on Star’s Rise Years After Their Split
Years after parting ways, Riccardo Piatti has opened up about his former student Jannik Sinner’s impressive rise in professional tennis — including his 2025 Australian Open triumph.
Despite their separation, Piatti holds no resentment toward the Italian star and acknowledged Sinner’s growth with clarity and perspective.
“I don’t suffer from it. I know him, I know how players think. They always look forward, not back,” Piatti said in a recent interview.
“I don’t see it as a question of ingratitude. Jannik is simply doing his job — he doesn’t owe anyone thanks. Nor do I feel the need to clarify anything with him. Tennis is a sport where ego plays a big role.”
Piatti, who helped shape Sinner’s early career, emphasized that his approach had always been to prepare the young talent for independence.
“I always wanted Jannik to become self-reliant — I knew that one day he would leave,” Piatti admitted.
“With him, I had to be a rigorous coach, sometimes even strict. That was my role. It’s what he needed at the time.”
Sinner has gone on to achieve significant milestones since the split, with the 2025 Australian Open title marking a major breakthrough in his career. Despite the end of their professional partnership, Piatti’s respect for Sinner’s journey remains evident.
