Sinner’s Former Coach Defends Alcaraz Amid Recent Struggles: “Don’t Crucify Him”
As Carlos Alcaraz works to regain his top form following recent setbacks, the young Spaniard has received support from a notable voice — Riccardo Piatti, former coach of rival Jannik Sinner.
Speaking to Corriere dello Sport, Piatti urged critics to show patience with Alcaraz, who already boasts an impressive résumé despite his youth.
“I see a moment of transition. At the top, there is a very grown Sinner. Alcaraz is chasing, but don’t crucify him — he already has four Slams. He was born in 2003. He’s building his life and career. Maturity will come too,” Piatti said.
Piatti praised Sinner’s steady rise and mental clarity, noting a difference in consistency between the two players.
“Sinner knows who he is, from the beginning. The Big Three always knew. Alcaraz knows every other day,” he added, highlighting the Spaniard’s ongoing search for balance.
Alcaraz, for his part, has acknowledged Sinner’s impressive form and the motivation it provides. Following their clash at the Six Kings Slam earlier this year, Alcaraz spoke about how Sinner’s success pushes him to improve.
“Probably if I have a bad day against Jannik, it’s 99 percent that I’m going to lose. That’s what I have in mind every time I face him,” Alcaraz said at the Australian Open in January 2025.
“The good thing for me is when I see him winning titles and climbing the rankings, it drives me to practice harder every day. During training, I’m always focused on what I need to improve to compete with him.”
While Alcaraz may be navigating a transitional phase, voices like Piatti’s serve as a reminder of the 21-year-old’s remarkable accomplishments — and his potential to rise once again.
