“We all have our own issues to deal with” – When Jessica Pegula compared her steady career to Sofia Kenin’s topsy-turvy time on tour
Jessica Pegula Reflects on Consistency vs. Struggles in Contrast to Sofia Kenin Ahead of Charleston Open Final
As Jessica Pegula prepares to face fellow American Sofia Kenin in the 2025 Charleston Open final, she opened up about the contrasting paths their careers have taken.
When asked about the challenges faced by both players, Pegula responded with humility and empathy.
“I don’t know how to answer that,” Pegula said. “I think we all have our own challenges and our own issues that we have to deal with, so it’s tough to talk about who has a tougher situation. I can’t really say on that.”
Despite Kenin’s recent ups and downs on tour, Pegula acknowledged her opponent’s high ceiling.
“She’s a Grand Slam champion. She’s a good player. She knows she can play at a high level. I feel like she’s been a little more solid this year. She’s still capable of upsetting a lot of top players,” Pegula added.
Reflecting on her own game, Pegula credited her steady approach as a key advantage.
“For me, I’ve just tried to use consistency and confidence to the best of my ability. Maybe that’s something she hasn’t had as much of lately, but I knew today was going to be really tough.”
Looking ahead to the final, Pegula expressed excitement about an all-American showdown.
“Well, one American is going to win the title, so that’s great!” she said. “It’s great for American tennis, the crowd, and everyone. I’m excited for the match tomorrow. She played well, so I’ve got nothing to lose. I’m gonna come out swinging.”
Pegula also joked about the playing conditions:
“If you can make the conditions a little easier, it’d be nice to have a fair shot tomorrow.”
The Charleston Open final promises to be a compelling matchup between two talented Americans—one riding the wave of consistency, the other fighting to reclaim past glory.
