“I have no idea where he is”: Novak Djokovic counts on family member as Andy Murray ‘vanishes’ before Monte-Carlo Masters
Novak Djokovic won’t be joined by Andy Murray in Monte-Carlo this week, as the 24-time Grand Slam champion revealed with a laugh that he has “no idea” where his longtime friend and former rival is.
Instead, Djokovic will be accompanied by his brother, Marko Djokovic, for the opening clay event of his season — a change that he says brings a unique emotional boost.
“I spoke to [Andy] four or five days ago, and he was back home with his family,” Djokovic shared. “I guess he’s working on his golf swing — that’s his priority this week.”
Though the comment was delivered with a smile, Murray’s absence comes as a surprise to many, with hopes that he may return for the upcoming ATP 1000 events in Madrid and Rome.
Meanwhile, Djokovic is focused on building momentum on clay after a strong showing in Miami, where he reached the final. There were concerns about a potential injury, as he developed a lump under his eye during the semifinals in Florida. However, the Serbian star confirmed he’s ready to compete in Monte-Carlo.
“It started during the semifinals in Miami and bothered me a bit in the final, but it’s calming down now,” he said. “I’m happy I rediscovered joy on the court in Miami. Now it’s about getting matches in and peaking toward the end of the clay season.”
Djokovic could face a classic showdown against fellow veteran Stan Wawrinka as early as the opening rounds — a clash between two of the sport’s most decorated players.
While the tennis world awaits Murray’s return, Djokovic continues his 2025 campaign with a familiar face by his side and his sights set on another dominant clay season.
