“I Got To Stay Protected With…,” Coco Gauff Drops an Unexpected but Amusing GRWM As She Gears Up for the Clay Season
Alexander Zverev’s run at the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 was abruptly cut short by Matteo Berrettini in the Round of 32. The world No. 2 suffered a disappointing 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 defeat, leading him to openly reflect on his performance.
“I thought my level was terrible, but that’s just my opinion,” Zverev admitted during his post-match interview. “It’s been the worst period for me since my injury.”
Zverev described his play, noting that although he started strong with a solid first set, his game faltered as soon as he was broken in the second. “Once that happened, I played 10 levels down. My ball was much slower, and I stopped hitting the ball. So, it’s me who lost the match.”
This loss adds to a series of disappointing results for the German. After a promising run to the Australian Open final, he has struggled to regain his form, suffering from a series of early exits in tournaments including Buenos Aires, Rio, Indian Wells, and Miami.
Zverev acknowledged the challenge he faces in his current stretch: “It’s the same story from the last few months. Nothing changes. I’ve lost many matches, and it’s all on me.”
His latest defeat in Monte-Carlo came at an unfortunate time. With Jannik Sinner suspended for three months due to a doping ban, this could have been a golden opportunity for Zverev to close the gap on the No. 1 spot. However, his struggles continue.
Looking ahead, Zverev will aim to turn things around at the ATP 500 event in Munich starting on April 14. With the support of his home crowd, he hopes to regain his momentum and begin his ascent back up the rankings.
