Despite being the top-seeded player at the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000, Alexander Zverev faced an early exit. The world No. 2 was defeated by Italy’s Matteo Berrettini in the Round of 32, with a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 scoreline. Zverev didn’t hold back in his post-match comments, offering an honest reflection on his performance.
“I thought my level was terrible, but that’s just my opinion,” Zverev admitted, according to the ATP Tour. “It’s been the worst period since my injury these last few months.”
He continued to analyze his match, saying, “I played a great first set, but after getting broken in the second, I dropped significantly. My ball speed was slower, and I stopped hitting the ball with intensity. I lost this match. It’s simple as that.”
This loss adds to a series of disappointing results for Zverev, who has been struggling since his Australian Open final appearance in January. “It’s been the same story the last few months—nothing changes,” Zverev said. “I haven’t won many matches. I keep losing.”
Zverev missed a golden opportunity to climb the ATP rankings, especially with Jannik Sinner’s suspension due to a doping ban. With his disappointing results, the German star was unable to capitalize on the opening to challenge for the top spot in the rankings.
Looking ahead, Zverev will attempt to turn things around at the ATP 500 Munich event, starting on April 14, where he will have the support of his home crowd to help get his career back on track.
