Alexander Zverev did not hold back when discussing his recent struggles after a disappointing opening-round exit at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters.
The German, who has not advanced past the quarter-finals in any of his six tournaments since the Australian Open, was beaten in three sets by Matteo Berrettini. Zverev expressed frustration over his performance, admitting that he’s currently experiencing his worst run since recovering from injury.
“I haven’t won many matches, so this has been the worst stretch for me since my injury,” Zverev said when asked about his recent form.
The Match
Zverev started well, winning the first set against Berrettini, but struggled to maintain that level, eventually falling 7-5 in the deciding set. The World No. 2 in the ATP Rankings was visibly dissatisfied with his level of play during his seventh encounter with Berrettini.
“I played a great first set, but after I got broken in the second, I dropped my level significantly. My shots were slower, and I just stopped hitting the ball. It’s been the same story for the past few months—nothing changes. So, once again, it was me who lost the match,” Zverev said. “I thought my level was terrible, but that’s just my opinion.”
A Frustrating Period
Since reaching the final in Melbourne earlier this year, Zverev has posted a 6-5 record, and he’s clearly frustrated with his lack of progress.
“It’s simple, really—I’m losing,” he said. “If I win two or three matches in this way, there wouldn’t be so many questions in my mind. But I’ve lost in three sets in Buenos Aires, Rio, Indian Wells, Miami, and here in Monte-Carlo. I haven’t won a single match, and that’s what matters.”
Zverev will look to bounce back when he competes next at the ATP 500 event in Munich, where he will be the top seed.
