It’s been a dramatic day on the tennis circuit, with major updates surrounding British stars Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper. Here’s everything you need to know.
Emma Raducanu Set to Slip in Rankings
After a strong run to the fourth round of the Miami Open helped her rise to No. 47 in the WTA rankings, Emma Raducanu is now expected to drop outside the top 50. The dip comes as she withdraws from several events to focus on recovery and training.
Raducanu has opted out of the upcoming WTA 250 event in Rouen and won’t be part of Great Britain’s Billie Jean King Cup team. Additionally, she’ll lose 108 points earned at last year’s Stuttgart Open.
The 2021 US Open champion is prioritizing her fitness and long-term form over short-term ranking points. She’s expected to return to the court at the Madrid and Italian Opens later this month, where she’ll have a shot at climbing back up the rankings.
Jack Draper Fumes in Monte Carlo Exit
Jack Draper’s Monte Carlo Masters campaign came to a frustrating end in the third round with a 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-4 defeat to Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
Struggling with his serve—committing 10 double faults—Draper vented his frustration on court, shouting “wake up” after being broken to love in the first set.
Sky Sports commentator Naomi Cavaday described Draper as “seething,” while co-commentator Ryan Harrison added, “He’s in a bit of a lull—trying to fire himself up.”
Despite showing flashes of brilliance, the 23-year-old Brit couldn’t regain control and exited before the quarterfinal stage.
Medvedev Confirms US Open Mixed Doubles Entry
Elsewhere, Daniil Medvedev confirmed he will team up with rising star Mirra Andreeva for the mixed doubles event at the 2025 US Open. The pair previously fell short at the Paris Olympics but are eager to try again—this time under new tournament rules.
With the US Open’s mixed doubles draw reduced to just 16 invited teams, the event will now be held during qualifying week. That change, plus a record prize fund of £770,000, has made the opportunity too good to pass up.
“Why not play?” Medvedev said. “The prize money is good. Mirra is one of the best on tour—I’m lucky to partner her. I just hope I don’t let her down this time.”
