Alex de Minaur enjoyed his best-ever showing at the Monte Carlo Masters this year, reaching the semi-finals with a string of impressive wins. The Australian defeated Tomas Machac, Daniil Medvedev, and Grigor Dimitrov, adapting his game well to the clay surface.

His dominant win over Dimitrov even saw him achieve a clay-court feat that eluded Rafael Nadal, but his remarkable run came to an end at the hands of Lorenzo Musetti.

Narrow Defeat in the Semi-Finals

De Minaur looked poised to reach his first ATP Masters 1000 final on clay after taking the opening set 6-1 against Musetti. However, the Italian rallied back to win the match 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(4), dashing De Minaur’s hopes in a closely contested decider.

Eyeing Success in Barcelona

Now ranked No. 7 in the world, De Minaur will look to continue his clay-court momentum at the Barcelona Open, where he previously reached the semi-finals. He begins his campaign against Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

This marks their third career meeting, with one win apiece. Notably, Etcheverry claimed their only previous clay-court encounter at Roland Garros in 2023.

A win for De Minaur could set up a blockbuster quarter-final against Monte Carlo champion Carlos Alcaraz—a rematch of their 2022 Barcelona Open semi-final, where De Minaur had two match points but ultimately fell in three sets.

Projected Path at the Barcelona Open:

Round Potential Opponent
First Round Tomas Martin Etcheverry
Second Round Jordan Thompson or Roberto Carballes Baena
Quarter-final Carlos Alcaraz (1), Ethan Quinn, Laslo Djere, or Arthur Rinderknech
Semi-final Stefanos Tsitsipas (3), Arthur Fils (7), Sebastian Korda, or Brandon Nakashima
Final Casper Ruud (2), Andrey Rublev (4), Holger Rune (6), or Frances Tiafoe (9)

The 2025 Barcelona Open kicks off Monday, April 14, with De Minaur set to take the court on Tuesday, April 15.
