Darts legend Michael van Gerwen expressed outrage after a recent incident involving beer, recalling a notorious moment from his career. In a lively interview with talkSPORT’s Paul Hawksbee and Andy Jacobs, the three-time PDC World Champion didn’t hold back, branding such antics “disgusting” while discussing his experiences in the sport, including a 2018 incident at Alexandra Palace.[](

Back in December 2018, van Gerwen was infamously showered with beer by a spectator during his walk-on for a World Darts Championship match against Alan Tabern. The world No. 1 at the time was left “angry” and “emotional,” forced to change his shirt and wash off the liquid before competing. Despite the disruption, he averaged 102.59 to secure a 3-1 victory. The culprit was swiftly ejected and banned for life from PDC events, with Sky Sports commentator Rod Studd calling the act “disgusting.”[](https://www.thesun.ie/sport/3521185/michael-van-gerwen-keeps-his-cool-after-being-soaked-with-beer-thrown-by-a-fan/)[](https://www.bbc.com/sport/darts/46580623)

“It’s never happened to me before,” van Gerwen said at the time. “I had two pints thrown at my neck. I was so angry, but what can you do? You can’t do anything. The only thing I could do was change my shirt.” He refused to use the incident as an excuse, adding, “Every player can learn from me because I never make excuses.”[](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/othersport/1059614/Michael-van-Gerwen-World-Darts-Championship-beer-throwing-reaction)

The Dutch star, known for his professionalism, also touched on his health-conscious approach to darts, having previously distanced himself from the sport’s boozy past. In 2013, he told the Daily Star, “The old times of drinking are gone. It’s a professional sport now, not about the pub and drinking. I look after my body seriously.”[](https://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/other-sports/darts-michael-van-gerwen-wants-18641327)

Van Gerwen’s resilience shone through in 2018, and he remains a dominant force, currently ranked world No. 3 with 47 PDC majors, including three World Championships (2014, 2017, 2019). His recent comments reflect his no-nonsense attitude, both on and off the oche.[
