‘Disgusting’ – Michael van Gerwen shares the only reason he will never have a drink with Luke Littler
Now that Luke Littler has turned 18, the young darts sensation is legally allowed to enjoy a drink—but don’t expect to see him raising a glass with Michael van Gerwen any time soon.
Littler, who celebrated his milestone birthday in January, has already made waves in the sport, not least by defeating Van Gerwen in the 2025 World Championship final. Known to enjoy the occasional Strongbow Dark Fruits, the teen has started to embrace the social side of the darts circuit.
But there’s one boundary Van Gerwen isn’t crossing.
“He didn’t have a pint of cider with me because I’ve never drunk a beer in my life. It’s disgusting,” the three-time world champion said during an appearance on talkSPORT’s Hawksbee & Jacobs show.
Van Gerwen acknowledged that Littler is growing more confident and sociable among fellow professionals—possibly boosted by his new legal status—but insisted their bonding won’t involve drinks.
“He’s starting to loosen up a bit—not in that way,” Van Gerwen said.
“He talks more, interacts more. He’s a good kid with a lot of capability.”
Premier League Progress
Littler hasn’t let his newfound adult freedoms distract him from the oche. He currently leads the Premier League standings with 28 points, five clear of Luke Humphries in second. His campaign has included four night victories, most recently in Newcastle.
Van Gerwen, meanwhile, has had a slower start to the season. His best performance came on Night Seven in Cardiff, where he reached the final only to lose to Littler. The Dutchman remains winless in this year’s Premier League but is optimistic ahead of Thursday’s Night 11 in Rotterdam—his home event.
Looking Ahead: Van Gerwen in Rotterdam
The 35-year-old faces Stephen Bunting in the quarter-finals and is determined to make a statement in front of his home crowd.
“I’ve got a good record against him,” Van Gerwen said.
“He had the win in Berlin, but apart from that, he’s had zero points. You see how quickly things can turn in this game.”
“You have to grind every week—travel, prep, play. It’s not easy, but I’m ready. Tomorrow night, it’s my turn to shine.”
