Tennis star Leylah Fernandez has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic events that occurred during the Lapu Lapu Day celebration in Vancouver, which resulted in the deaths of several members of the Canadian-Filipino community.

“I am absolutely devastated to hear about the deaths of fellow Canadian-Filipinos at the Lapu Lapu Day in Vancouver this weekend,” Fernandez shared in a statement. “My thoughts go out to the victims of this horrific incident, their families, and the entire community.”

The young Canadian, who has often spoken proudly of her Filipino heritage, is known for her strong connection to her roots. During her memorable run at the 2021 US Open, Fernandez was uplifted by overwhelming support from Filipino fans around the world.

“I’m so, so happy to hear that everyone in the Philippines is cheering for me and supporting me,” she said at the time. “When I get back to Canada and visit my grandfather, I hope he’ll make a really nice dish for the whole family — especially a Filipino dish, because I miss it. I just can’t wait to learn more about the culture in the future.”
