The World Darts Federation (WDF) has officially approved a new-look dartboard for use at the 2025 WDF World Championship, and the decision has sparked mixed reactions across the darts community. The change follows the governing body’s new partnership with Target Darts, meaning all matches at the upcoming Lakeside tournament will be played on the company’s TOR series boards.

A Major Shift for WDF Events

Earlier this month, the WDF confirmed that Target will supply the official competition boards for the 2025 Lakeside World Championship, marking one of the most significant equipment updates the organisation has made in recent years. The TOR board — known for its modern wiring system, sharper visual contrast, and durability — represents a noticeable stylistic shift from the traditional boards used at previous WDF events.

While the core layout remains identical to the standard 1–20 board required under WDF rules, the cleaner numbering, sleek modern design, and updated colouring give the board a distinctly different appearance on stage.

Players React: Curiosity, Not Concern

Players across the WDF circuit have generally welcomed the change, with many noting the improved visibility and slimmer wiring.

Some competitors have described the board as “crisper” and “sharper on the eye,” praising the higher-contrast segments. Others say they will need time to adjust but appreciate the WDF making a move that keeps pace with advancing board technology used in other organisations.

No major players have voiced strong objections, but several have admitted that switching board manufacturers close to a world championship adds an additional layer of preparation.

Fans Are Split Over the New Aesthetic

Among fans, the reaction has been more divided. On social platforms and darts forums, many supporters say the upgrade was overdue and welcome the cleaner stage presentation the board provides.

However, a sizeable portion of the fanbase has been quick to point out that what they consider “classic” Lakeside aesthetics — from the lighting to the board style — are part of the event’s identity. For them, the TOR board’s sleeker appearance feels more like a modern PDC set-up than the traditionally nostalgic WDF stage they’re used to.

Some simply prefer the look and feel of the long-established boards and say the new design will take some getting used to.

A Move Aimed at Modernisation

Despite the split in opinion, the WDF maintains the updated board will enhance the consistency, visibility and overall match quality at one of the biggest tournaments in the sport. By aligning with another major darts manufacturer, the organisation is positioning itself for a more modern presentation as it continues rebuilding momentum.

Whether the change becomes a long-term standard or remains a one-tournament trial at Lakeside will likely depend on player feedback and fan response once the 2025 World Championship gets underway.
