LUKE LITTLER’S grandmother got the surprise of her life after spotting a giant mural of the darts superstar while travelling on a bus through Warrington.
Just four days after lifting the Betfred World Matchplay title in Blackpool, the 19-year-old returned home on Thursday to officially unveil the stunning 38ft artwork celebrating his incredible rise to the top of the sport.
The eye-catching mural, painted on the side of the Golden Square Shopping Centre, honours the world No.1’s remarkable achievements, including consecutive PDC World Championship titles.
But before the official unveiling, Littler’s nan accidentally became one of the first people to see it.
She was travelling through the town on Wednesday when she noticed the huge artwork as preparations were underway for the ceremony. Unable to contain her excitement, she quickly got off the bus to admire it up close before sharing the news with the rest of the family.
The colourful mural captures Littler with his arms raised in celebration, roaring with emotion beneath the slogan “Born to Win” – the name of his signature darts product range.
Hundreds gathered for the unveiling, with Littler joined by family, friends, Warrington Mayor Cllr Sagheer Zaman, local schoolchildren and members of the public.
The mural reflects an extraordinary journey for the teenager, who was sitting his GCSEs just three years ago before becoming one of the biggest names in world darts.
Since turning professional, Littler has collected 15 major titles in just two-and-a-half seasons and established himself as the sport’s dominant force.
His sponsors, Target Darts, helped bring the project to life, describing it as a celebration of one of the greatest success stories the sport has ever seen while inspiring the next generation of players.
As part of the initiative, Target Darts will also donate darts equipment to 63 schools across the Warrington area to help introduce more young people to the sport.
Littler said: “Growing up in Warrington, I never imagined something like this would happen.
“It’s a huge honour to have a mural in my home town and I’m incredibly grateful to everyone at Target Darts for making it happen.
“Hopefully it inspires young people here to believe they can achieve something special too.
“If it encourages even a few kids to pick up a set of darts and enjoy the sport, then that’s something I’m really proud of.”
The tribute comes after another historic week for Littler, who demolished world No.4 Gerwyn Price 18-9 in the World Matchplay final at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens.
His remarkable three-dart average of 111.53 set a new record for a World Matchplay final, while his overall tournament average also surpassed the previous benchmark held by 16-time champion Phil Taylor.
