Darts legend Phil The Power Taylor has admitted he is astonished by Luke Littler’s unconventional preparation as the teenage superstar gears up for his £1 million bid at the 2026 PDC World Darts Championship.

Taylor, a 16-time world champion known for his ruthless discipline and strict routines, revealed that Littler’s laid-back approach is something he could never have adopted during his own dominant career.

Taylor: ‘It Surprised Me — I’d Never Have Done That’

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Taylor said he couldn’t believe how relaxed Littler remains despite the enormous expectations on his shoulders.

“What Luke does before big tournaments… I’d never do that. It surprised me,”
Taylor said. “But that’s him — he’s a different animal. He plays his way, prepares his way, and somehow turns up playing like a monster.”

While Taylor didn’t criticise the youngster, he admitted Littler’s routine is the total opposite of the rigid structure he followed for decades.

A New Generation, A New Mentality

Littler is known for being refreshingly unfazed by pressure. Whether it’s eating kebabs after victories, gaming on his days off, or keeping training sessions short and sharp, the 18-year-old has never taken the traditional path.

Taylor acknowledged that Littler represents a new breed of player — one that thrives without overthinking.

“He’s not like we were — worrying about everything being perfect.
He relaxes, chills out, even goes out and enjoys himself. And then he comes in and hits 110 averages. It’s unbelievable.”

Why Littler’s Approach Works

The young phenom has repeatedly said he performs best when he feels “normal” — avoiding the pressure and intense build-up that often derails players before major tournaments.

Instead of marathon practice sessions, Littler focuses on rhythm, instinct, and maintaining the same lifestyle he would have outside competition.

Coaches have praised this new-school approach, saying it keeps him mentally fresh and prevents burnout — which is crucial given his hectic schedule and the spotlight he now lives under.

Eyes on a £1m Pay Day

This year’s World Championship features a record-breaking £1 million winner’s prize, adding even more intensity to the event.

Despite the enormous stakes, Littler remains as cool as ever.

He has spent recent weeks doing what he enjoys most — playing exhibitions, relaxing with family, and even attending football matches — all while keeping his throwing sharp.

Taylor Still Impressed Despite His Shock

Though stunned by Littler’s casual habits, Taylor was quick to praise the teenager’s talent and mental toughness.

“Look, whatever he’s doing, it works.
You don’t get to his level by accident.
If he keeps his head right, he could win multiple world titles.”

Taylor remains one of Littler’s biggest admirers and believes the youngster is already mature beyond his years.

The Verdict: Different Paths, Same Goal

Whether through Taylor’s intense discipline or Littler’s relaxed swagger, the aim is the same: world titles.

And with Littler aiming for darts’ first £1m cheque, all eyes will be on whether his unconventional preparation can deliver the sport’s richest-ever prize.
