Raymond van Barneveld has shared an intriguing insight into the habits of teenage sensation Luke Littler, lifting the lid on what he regularly notices behind the scenes at major tournaments.

Speaking during the World Darts Championship, van Barneveld explained that Littler’s behaviour away from the oche is one of the biggest reasons for his rapid rise to the top of the sport.

Calm beyond his years

According to the five-time world champion, Littler stands out backstage for his calm and focus — traits rarely seen in players so young.

“He’s always relaxed,” van Barneveld said. “You see him backstage and he’s just doing his own thing, not panicking, not overthinking. That’s unusual at that age.”

Van Barneveld noted that while many players pace nervously or constantly adjust their routines before matches at Alexandra Palace, Littler appears comfortable and settled, even with huge expectations on his shoulders.

Preparation, not hype

The Dutch legend added that Littler isn’t drawn into the noise or hype surrounding him. Instead, he tends to focus quietly on preparation — throwing darts, chatting casually with familiar faces, or listening to music.

“That tells you a lot,” van Barneveld explained. “He treats it like it’s normal, even though it’s not. That’s why he plays the way he does on stage.”

Respect from a great

Van Barneveld’s comments underline the level of respect Littler is already earning from some of the biggest names in darts. Having competed against generations of top players, the Dutchman believes Littler’s mindset is what separates him from other young prospects.

“Talent gets you so far,” he said. “But what he has upstairs — that’s special.”

A glimpse behind the curtain

With the World Championship often focusing on walk-ons, crowd noise and pressure-packed moments on stage, van Barneveld’s observations offer a rare glimpse into the quieter moments that shape elite performance.

As Littler continues to shoulder the spotlight at Ally Pally, it seems his composed backstage routine may be just as important as the explosive scoring fans see under the lights.

And if Raymond van Barneveld’s assessment is anything to go by, Luke Littler is behaving backstage like someone who believes he belongs — because he already does. 🎯
