Germany’s Ricardo Pietreczko has urged the Professional Darts Corporation to introduce a rule change at the World Darts Championship, claiming there is one crowd-related issue that “every player hates.”

Pietreczko booked his place in the third round on Saturday night with a dramatic 3–2 victory over Dave Chisnall. The result came despite Chisnall arriving at the tournament ranked world No.21 and having eased past Fallon Sherrock 3–0 in the opening round.

While Chisnall had been clinical on the doubles against Sherrock, his finishing deserted him against Pietreczko. The 45-year-old converted just 10 of his 37 attempts at double, even though he hammered in 11 maximums compared to Pietreczko’s none. Nicknamed “Pikachu” because of his love of Pokémon, Pietreczko proved far more efficient at crucial moments, breaking throw in the final set before clinching victory in a sudden-death leg.

However, the German’s win was overshadowed by frustration with the crowd. During the deciding stages, Pietreczko was subjected to loud whistling from sections of the audience — an issue that has become increasingly common on the circuit.

Numerous players have raised concerns about whistling in recent months, with the problem predating the World Championship. Referee Kirk Bevins has previously admitted how difficult it is to police, noting that warnings to the crowd often only make matters worse.

Pietreczko believes stronger measures are now needed at Alexandra Palace, calling on the PDC to increase security inside the arena to prevent the issue escalating further.

“Every time it’s the same — whistling or booing,” Pietreczko said after his win. “The booing is not a problem, but the whistling… your concentration is gone in that moment, and I think every player hates it.

“It needs more security in the crowd. It’s difficult, but it’s the same loud whistling every time.”

The PDC has already addressed the issue this year, releasing a statement on crowd behaviour following incidents during a Premier League night in Glasgow in February.

“The PDC wishes to strongly reiterate that it does not condone any behaviour which can disrupt an event, such as whistling or booing when players are throwing,” the statement read.
“Every player goes on stage with the intention of performing to the best of their ability and providing an entertaining spectacle for all fans, whether in the venue or watching worldwide.

“As per the terms and conditions of entry to events, spectators who act inappropriately can be removed from the venue.”

With players continuing to speak out, Pietreczko’s call has added fresh pressure on the PDC to find a more effective solution — before whistling becomes an even bigger issue on darts’ biggest stage.
