Stephen Bunting has responded publicly after his inclusion in the 2026 Premier League Darts sparked debate among fans and pundits.

The PDC confirmed the eight-man line-up earlier this week, with Luke Littler, Luke Humphries, Gian van Veen and Michael van Gerwen qualifying automatically as the top four players on the Order of Merit. The remaining places were filled by Jonny Clayton, Gerwyn Price, Josh Rock and Bunting.

While most selections were widely expected, Bunting’s inclusion proved the most controversial. The Liverpool favourite, nicknamed the “People’s Champion”, endured a difficult Premier League campaign last year and exited the recent World Championship in the third round, leading some to question the decision.

Sky Sports analyst Wayne Mardle admitted he was “slightly surprised” by Bunting’s selection, suggesting others may have stronger claims based on recent results.

Amid the discussion, Bunting took to social media to address the reaction, choosing to focus on gratitude and determination rather than criticism.

Writing online, he said:
“Grateful for the opportunity. I’ll work hard, give it everything and prove why I belong on this stage. See you all on the road.”

The statement was met with a wave of support from fans, many praising Bunting’s attitude and pointing to his popularity with crowds across the UK and Europe as a key factor in his selection.

Bunting has previously spoken about how much the Premier League means to him, describing it as one of the toughest and most demanding events on the darts calendar. With a fresh chance to compete across the 17-week season, he will be keen to silence doubters and make a stronger impact this time around.
