Luke Littler has hit out at a decision made by a darts referee after what he described as a harmless freak incident, insisting the situation was blown out of proportion.

The reigning world champion was left frustrated during his match after play was briefly halted following an unusual moment at the oche. A stray distraction prompted intervention from the referee, who stepped in amid concerns over safety and potential disruption.

However, Littler made it clear afterwards that he felt the stoppage was unnecessary.

“There was nothing to worry about,” Littler said. “It was one of those freak things that happens in darts from time to time. I was fine to carry on and it didn’t affect me at all.”

The 18-year-old suggested the pause disrupted his rhythm more than the incident itself, adding that players are used to dealing with unexpected moments during matches, particularly on big stages with lively crowds.

“In these environments, things happen,” he explained. “You just get on with it. Stopping the game made it feel like a bigger issue than it really was.”

While officials are required to prioritise player safety, Littler’s comments are likely to reignite debate around how referees handle unusual interruptions and whether matches are sometimes halted too quickly.

Despite his irritation, Littler quickly refocused and went on to complete the match without further incident, underlining the composure that has become a hallmark of his rapid rise at the top of the sport.
