Luke Humphries reveals new diet and fitness plan as he bids to topple Luke Littler as darts’ world No1
LUKE HUMPHRIES has confessed he “let himself go” before committing to a new fitness and health-focused routine.
The darts star has endured a difficult spell in recent weeks, suffering a downturn in form after being knocked out of the World Darts Championship quarter-finals by Gian van Veen.
Humphries also exited at the quarter-final stage in both the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Darts Masters, and the run of results saw him overtaken by Luke Littler at the top of the world rankings.
Now, Cool Hand Luke says he has shifted his attention since his Worlds departure, admitting he was no longer happy with his lifestyle and diet.
Humphries believes he is beginning to feel “back to where he was four years ago” as he aims to rediscover his best form on the oche — and reclaim the world No.1 spot.
Speaking to Live Darts, Humphries explained:
“Since the Worlds I’ve been on more of a fitness diet. Not to lose weight, but to keep myself healthy.
“I felt like sometimes I let myself go a little bit. You don’t exercise as much, you don’t eat as healthy as much, and even though I kept my natural weight, my body wasn’t healthy.
“So I’ve been trying to keep myself really healthy, and yeah, I feel good. Healthy body, healthy mind.”
The 29-year-old revealed he has cut down on “bad” food choices, particularly after nights out, while also increasing his exercise levels.
He added:
“It’s just about making little choices. Don’t eat bad after a night, have something better for yourself.
“It’s not huge sacrifices, it’s just looking after yourself and trying to keep the energy levels there, exercising a bit more and eating a bit healthier.”
Humphries says the changes have already made a noticeable difference.
“In the last six or seven days, my body feels really good. I feel like I’m back to where I was four years ago.
“I’ve not really been doing anything psychologically. It’s more about getting my body feeling good. When you feel that, your mind feels healthy.”
When asked when he began the new plan, Humphries revealed it started on January 2.
“Before that, you’re eating all right, but you’re just maintaining.
“I wanted to be more energetic. I could last the whole night, go to 2 a.m. and not let it affect me. Just little changes. That’s all it’s about.”
Humphries is currently in action at the PDC World Masters, where he opened his campaign with a 3-1 victory over Dave Chisnall.
Next up, he will turn his attention to the Premier League Darts next month, where he is set to face Gerwyn Price in Newcastle on February 5.
