Michael van Gerwen has withdrawn from tonight’s BetMGM Premier League Darts night in Glasgow due to illness.
The Dutch star had already been struggling with health issues earlier this week, raising doubts about whether he would be fit enough to compete. Those concerns have now been confirmed, with the Professional Darts Corporation announcing he will not take part in Thursday’s action.
In a brief statement, officials said: “Michael van Gerwen has withdrawn from tonight’s BetMGM Premier League action in Glasgow due to illness.”
Earlier in the week, fellow Dutch pro Vincent van der Voort revealed on the Darts Draait Door that van Gerwen was unwell and facing a race against time to be fit. He explained there was still uncertainty over whether the three-time world champion would be able to play.
His withdrawal comes at a frustrating moment, given his strong start to the season. He claimed victory on opening night in Newcastle and then finished runner-up to Gerwyn Price in Antwerp last week.
With van Gerwen out, Luke Littler receives a bye straight into the semi-finals, avoiding an immediate rematch after their recent clash — where the Dutchman edged a 6-4 win.
Littler will now face the winner of an all-Welsh quarter-final between Jonny Clayton and Price.
