Darts star goes full Paul Tierney at Modus Super Series as Chelsea fans fear ‘we’re being absolutely clowned’
Darts referee Paul Hinks poked fun at Chelsea after their bizarre team huddle moment went viral.
Under boss Liam Rosenior, the Blues have adopted a tradition of gathering in a tight huddle around the centre circle before kick-off. But during Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle at Stamford Bridge, referee Paul Tierney accidentally ended up stuck right in the middle of the players.
Sky Sports cameras captured the awkward scene perfectly, and the clip quickly spread online as fans joked it looked more like a comedy sketch than a Premier League moment.
The Modus Super Series soon joined in on the fun, posting their own parody video. In the clip, darts referee Paul Hinks is surrounded by players in a mock huddle while audio from the Chelsea moment plays over the top.
The camera even spins around the circle in a near-perfect recreation of the original incident involving Tierney.
Chelsea supporters were stunned to see their club being mocked across the internet.
One fan wrote: “Sack him tonight. We’re a f***ing clown show.”
Another commented: “World class.”
A third fumed: “We’re being f***ing laughed at! @Chelsea.”
While rivals enjoyed the joke online, Rosenior clearly didn’t see the humour after the match.
The Chelsea boss defended his players’ huddle and criticised the referee for focusing on it.
“My players made the decision that they wanted to be around the ball, to respect the ball and show unity and leadership. That is not my decision,” Rosenior said.
“That was a decision between the leadership group and the team. There is nothing that they’re doing with that huddle that is disrespectful to the opposition.”
Rosenior also revealed the incident was raised during a discussion with the officials.
“We had a meeting with the referee, my assistant goes in, and the first thing he talks about is our huddle,” he explained.
“He says about when I complained about Arsenal being in our half. We’re not being disrespectful to the opposition.
“If Paul had focused more on his job, which was to make the right decision, we have a penalty today.
“I don’t think anybody in this room can say that Woltemade doesn’t kick Cole Palmer down in the box. So let’s focus on the things that are important.
“My team showing unity is not as important as getting the decisions right on the pitch.”
The former Hull and Strasbourg boss added that he plans to raise the issue with PGMOL.
