Nathan Aspinall reveals why he ditched popular Mr Brightside walk-on song after German Darts Grand Prix win
Nathan Aspinall surprised fans by ditching his trademark walk-on song during his run to victory at the German Darts Grand Prix.
The Stockport star is famously associated with “Mr Brightside” by The Killers, a track that usually gets crowds bouncing before he even throws a dart. But ahead of his clash with Kevin Doets in Munich, Aspinall opted for something different.
Instead, he walked out to “Lose Yourself” by Eminem — a change that proved an instant hit with the German crowd, who quickly got into the rhythm and backed the Englishman.
Aspinall himself joined in the fun, dancing on stage before going on to secure a convincing 7-2 victory over Doets.
Some fans initially assumed the absence of “Mr Brightside” was an error by organisers, but Master of Ceremonies Philip Brzezinski clarified the situation on social media.
“It wasn’t a mistake,” he explained. “Nathan has wanted that song for a while, and today we gave it a try for the semifinals.”
Despite the switch, Aspinall didn’t abandon his iconic anthem completely. After defeating Danny Noppert 8-5 in the final, “Mr Brightside” rang out around Munich’s Kulturhalle Zenith as he celebrated his triumph.
It’s not the first time Aspinall has mixed things up in Germany. He previously used “Lose Yourself” at the German Darts Championship last October, going on to beat Maximilian Czerwinski 6-3 in the opening round.
Speaking about the change at the time, Aspinall admitted he wanted something fresh.
“It really got me pumped,” he said. “Everyone loves ‘Mr Brightside’, but I hear it hundreds of times a year.
“I’m a massive Eminem fan and just wanted to try something a bit different at the start. The DJs on the European Tour are brilliant — who knows, maybe we’ll bring it into Sky and ITV coverage too.”
