Ross Smith has taken aim at some of his fellow darts professionals over their choice of matchday clothing, jokingly describing some players as “skanky” for repeatedly wearing the same shirts.
The world No. 15 admitted he cannot understand why certain players continue to turn up in the same outfits, insisting that he always changes into fresh clothing.
Smith, 37, chose not to reveal which players he was referring to, but he was certainly outspoken when discussing the habits of some of his fellow professionals.
The Dover thrower has enjoyed an impressive career, winning the European Championship in 2022 and collecting eight ProTour titles along the way.
Ross Smith inspired by Wayne Mardle
Smith also revealed that former darts star Wayne Mardle was one of his biggest inspirations while growing up.
The former World Championship finalist became famous for his colourful Hawaiian shirts, energetic walk-ons and distinctive throwing style.
Smith admitted he loved watching Mardle as a youngster and even tried to copy his technique.
He described Mardle as a major influence during his childhood and said watching him compete helped inspire his own journey in professional darts.
Smith targeting World Series success
Smith is now looking to make an impact on the World Series circuit after making his debut in New Zealand last week.
However, his first appearance ended in heartbreak when Adam Leek edged him 6-5 in a dramatic opening-round encounter.
Smith had six match darts to seal victory but was unable to convert any of them, allowing Leek to complete a remarkable comeback.
He will now have an opportunity to put that disappointment behind him at the Australian Darts Masters.
Smith faces Brody Klinge on Friday, hoping to produce a stronger performance and finally claim his first World Series victory.
