Mark Webster has opened up on a recent health setback that has temporarily kept him away from darts events and television work.

The former Lakeside world champion revealed he was diagnosed earlier this year with hairy cell leukaemia (HCL), a rare but treatable blood condition, and has been advised by doctors to avoid busy tournament venues while recovering.

Webster, 42, has not appeared on Premier League Darts coverage in recent months after stepping away from broadcasting duties in February.

The Welshman, who won the BDO world title in 2008, remains a popular figure in the sport through his work with Sky Sports and ITV. However, his recovery from chemotherapy treatment has meant he has had to take time away from the busy darts schedule.

Speaking to Sky Sports reporter Polly James on the Darts World YouTube channel, Webster explained that his immune system is still rebuilding following treatment.

He said: “On January 8, I was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer called hairy cell leukaemia.

“It sounds alarming when you hear the word leukaemia, but thankfully it has a very good prognosis and most cases respond really well to treatment.

“At the moment, my recovery is just taking a little longer than expected because my blood counts haven’t fully bounced back yet.

“That means my immune system still isn’t where it needs to be, so I can’t return to work just yet.

“It’s frustrating because I’m used to being busy, but overall I’m managing things alright.”

Webster added that the Premier League night in Newcastle on February 5 was the last event he worked before taking a step back.

Before receiving his diagnosis, the two-time PDC World Darts Championship semi-finalist said he had been dealing with fatigue and tiredness, which eventually led to blood tests and further medical checks.

While there is no confirmed date for his return, Webster remains hopeful of being back around the darts circuit later this year.

“I’m trusting the process,” he said. “I’m still doing little bits of work, just not as much as I’d like.

“I miss being involved every week because it’s something I really enjoy.

“I’d love to get back soon, but I also have to be patient and listen to the people looking after me.”
