Luke Littler admits nerves ahead of ‘life-changing’ Netflix event with £501,000 on the line and Gary Lineker hosting
Luke Littler has warned that he will show no mercy to the amateur players hoping to beat him and walk away with a life-changing £501,000 prize, insisting he intends to defeat every challenger.
The two-time world darts champion will face 20 unknown players in a special live Netflix event on Friday, October 30, in Manchester.
The format is straightforward but unforgiving. Each challenger must race from 501 points down to zero, finishing on a double, in a single-leg showdown against Littler. If the amateur wins, they claim the enormous cash prize. If Littler wins, he moves on to the next opponent.
At just 19, The Nuke has already established himself as one of the most dominant players in professional darts. However, he will need to win 20 consecutive legs to prevent any of the contestants from taking home the £501,000 jackpot.
One defeat will bring his challenge to an immediate end.
Despite the possibility of handing an ordinary player a fortune, Littler has made it clear that he will not deliberately make things easier for his opponents.
The world No. 1 has his reputation to protect and is determined to avoid the embarrassment of losing to an amateur in front of a huge live audience.
Speaking about the upcoming show, Littler explained: “My first thought about the show was that this could be life-changing for someone if they beat me. And my second thought was hopefully no one does.
“It’s a good opportunity for myself to show what I can do, and it’s a great idea by Netflix. I think people will go absolutely bonkers for it when it’s on.
“If I lose one game, then I’m done. That’s the only difference. However, if I start off well, then it’s going to be very hard for my opponents to get into the game.”
Although he admitted that the occasion could make him nervous initially, Littler believes he will settle into his rhythm once the action gets underway.
He also hopes the programme will introduce more people to darts and help the sport attract an even bigger audience.
“I might be a bit nervous at the start, but as soon as I get going, I’ll be alright. It’ll bring in a huge audience, and hopefully more people will get into darts because of the show.
“The fun part of the show is you don’t know who the 20 are. You don’t know how they are going to play, and they only have to have one good leg and I’m done.
“I think they are going to be nervous, though, because they’re up against me and because the money they could win would be life-changing.”
Littler acknowledged that the single-leg format gives every contestant a genuine opportunity to cause an upset, regardless of their experience.
Nevertheless, he remains confident in his ability to handle the pressure and make it through all 20 challenges.
“I’m just going to try and relax and enjoy it and hopefully beat everyone, but if it’s not to be, it’s not to be. I think we’re in for a great night either way.
“There’s half a million quid up for grabs. I won’t be going easy at all.
“I’ll be wanting to beat everyone who comes up. Maybe the first few legs could be a bit nervy, but once I get going, then I don’t think anyone will stop me.”
Gary Lineker and Richard Osman to present Netflix special
The groundbreaking live programme will be presented by former England footballer Gary Lineker alongside television personality Richard Osman, best known for hosting the BBC quiz show Pointless.
The event is expected to attract considerable attention, combining the pressure of professional darts with the possibility of an enormous financial reward for an amateur player.
However, Littler will have little time to relax before the Netflix spectacle. The weekend before the show, he is scheduled to compete in Dortmund at the European Championship, one of the two major televised titles still missing from his collection.
The teenager could face a difficult atmosphere in Germany, where sections of the crowd have previously made their hostility towards him clear.
But Littler is accustomed to playing under pressure and insists that attempts to unsettle him will not change his approach.
Asked how he would react if an opponent tried to get inside his head during the Netflix event, he made his position clear.
“I will just do my thing, whatever they do is up to them.”
He added: “If they want to try sledging me, I will leave them to it. If that’s what they want to do, that’s fair enough.
“I don’t want them to settle down. I want them to be nervous for the whole leg.”
Rather than allowing the occasion to overwhelm them, Littler believes the amateurs should embrace the opportunity and take their chances against him.
With £501,000 potentially waiting after just one successful leg, he expects his opponents to give everything they have.
“I think they’ve just got to look at it like they have this one chance, this one leg to beat me for half a million quid, and then just go out there and throw the kitchen sink at me.
“If I throw well, I’ll be fine. My mentality is that if I play at my best, no one can beat me.”
With 20 challengers standing between Littler and a perfect night, the Netflix special promises a fascinating test of nerve. The amateurs need just one outstanding leg to make their dreams come true, but the world champion has made one thing abundantly clear: he will be playing to win.
