Michael van Gerwen sensationally had an Elvis impersonator removed from the stage area at the Nordic Darts Masters before going on to claim the title in Copenhagen.

The three-time world champion was locked in a tense quarter-final battle with Viktor Tingstrom when the unusual incident unfolded.

Van Gerwen had just edged into a 3-2 lead after pinning double five, but appeared distracted as he retrieved his darts from the board.

A fan dressed as the legendary entertainer Elvis Presley was standing close to the side of the stage, catching the Dutchman’s attention.

Concerned that the impersonator could distract him while throwing, Van Gerwen gestured for officials to remove the spectator. Moments later, the Elvis lookalike was seen leaving the area.

Tingstrom appeared amused by the situation, sharing a brief exchange with Van Gerwen before play resumed.

The Dutch star eventually survived a dramatic decider to seal a 6-5 victory over the Swede and progress to the next stage.

Van Gerwen’s impressive run continued as he defeated Jonny Clayton in the semi-finals before setting up a blockbuster final against Luke Humphries.

The final also went the distance, with Van Gerwen triumphing in a deciding leg after Humphries missed a match dart at the bullseye. Van Gerwen then stepped in to nail double 20 and secure the trophy.

Earlier in the tournament, the former world No.1 had comfortably dispatched Oskar Lukasiak 6-2 in the opening round.

After the bizarre Elvis distraction and a series of hard-fought victories, Van Gerwen finished the weekend with both the title and the £30,000 winner’s prize.
