Carlos Alcaraz was sent crashing out of the ATP Finals after the tennis star suffered a humbling defeat at the hands of Alexander Zverev on Friday. While Novak Djokovic has a long break to look forward to, the Spaniard still has his eyes on one more trophy for 2024.
The 21-year-old needed to beat Zverev in order to seal his progress to the semi-finals, but he was nowhere near his best form after going down 7-6, 6-4 to the in-form German. Zverev, 27, takes on Taylor Fritz for a place in tomorrow’s final in Turin.
It also means Alcaraz missed the chance to close the gap in the world rankings to Zverev after losing his spot as the world No 2 earlier this year. And it capped what is a dark time for Spanish tennis at the moment, with Rafael Nadal set to retire after the Davis Cup later this month.
